We had a beautiful day on the ocean yesterday. Blue sky, sun and good wind. Since we have crossed the equator, the temperature has risen significantly. It’s true it is summer in the northern hemisphere but I was not expecting such a marked change.

We had a steady wind the whole day, almost from the South at 170°, blowing between 15 and 17 knots. Our speed was between 9 and 9.5 knots.

Our route is becoming strategic now. Indeed, we have to face a double challenge, first try to avoid the no wind zone of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, commonly called doldrums, then position ourselves a bit to the East of the rhumb line so that we are ready for the trade winds of the Northern hemisphere which blow from the North East and which should start a
bit below the Cape Verde islands. According to the latest forecast from Philippe, we are well positionned now, we will have a good wind for the next two days, avoiding a large are with no wind to our West and will be in the doldrums on Monday August 22.

It should be short, I forecast an arrival in Praia on August 23rd end of day.

Our course is indeed set for Praia, the main island downwind and in the South of the archipelago. Bernard has a time constraint, he will be able to catch a plane from there. It will be short stop, we are planning to continue quickly to Mindelo.

The youngsters have started to try their hand at fishing. Yesterday at 6am, the line caught but due to a wrong reflex, by tightening the brake, the line broke. At the end of the day, a fish bit on the hook but the boat was going fast at close to 10 knots. By the time we slowed it down, the fish unhooked itself! The fishes don’t have to worry too much from us, but still I do hope we will catch one.

Yesterday, as a self-respecting Italian, Matteo wanted to prepare a pizza. The beginings were difficult (Niels where are you?!) but at the end, with Andrea’s help, he succeeded. We had three beautiful and delicious pizzas with mozarella and green peppers.

A the end of the day yesterday, the sky changed completely and is now entirely covered by clouds. Rain is not far away.

Nous avons eu une belle journée en mer hier. Ciel bleu, soleil et bon vent. Depuis qu’on a franchi l’équateur, la température a augmenté, c’est vrai que c’est l’été dans l’hémisphère nord mais je ne m’attendais pas un changement aussi net.

Nous avons toute la journée un bon vent, presque du sud, 170° qui soufflait entre 15 et 17 noeuds. On avance entre 9 et 9.5 noeuds.

Notre route va devenir stratégique, en effet, il s’agit d’abord d’essayer d’éviter les zones sans vent de la Zone de Convergence Inter-Tropicale, communément appelée du pot-au-noir, ensuite se positionner un peu à l’Est de la rhumb line pour être prêt aux alizés de l’hémisphère nord qui soufflent du Nord-Est et qui commencent un peu en dessous des îles du
Cap Vert. D’après les dernières prévisions de Philippe, nous serons dans le pot-au-noir à partir de lundi 22.
Ce sera court, je prévois une arrivée à Praia, en fin de journée le mardi 23 août.

Nous faisons en effet cap pour Praia, l’ile principale sous le vent et la plus au Sud de l’archipel. Bernard a une contrainte d’agenda, de là il pourra facilement prendre un avion. Ce sera un arrêt court, nous continuerons vers Mindelo.

Les jeunes ont commencé à s’essayer à la pèche. Hier matin à 6h, un poisson avait pris mais dans un mauvais réflexe en serrant le frein, la ligne s’est cassée. En fin de journée, une bonite avait mordu à l’hameçon mais le bateau allait très vite à près de 10 noeuds, le temps de réduire les voiles, le poisson s’était détaché! Les poissons ont encore de beaux jours devant eux, mais j’espère que nous en prendrons un quand même.

Hier soir, Matteo, en bon Italien, à voulu préparer une pizza, les débuts furent difficiles (Niels où es-tu?!) mais avec l’aide d’Andrea, il a réussi! Nous avons eu trois belles et délicieuses pizzas avec mozzarella et poivron vert.

En fin de journée, le ciel change fortement et se couvre entièrement de nuages. La pluie ne sera pas loin.
