This Monday morning, to our surprise the wind showed no sign of abating. It was still blowing at 27 to 33 knots. The sky was still gray and the air was full of spray and rain. And we are still in the washing machine!

We took a new weather report and I guess the only explanation I can find is that the depression stopped moving North and we just sailed into it.

Philippe kept being very positive: “Enjoy the wind that there is because tonight around 11 pm, the wind will start decreasing. You’ll have light wind tomorrow and no wind at all Tuesday night and on Wednesday.”

In the afternoon, the wind had veered a bit more towards aft, so Bernard and I went outside to enjoy steering down the waves. Michel and Niels will remember. We take turns at the wheel for 10 minutes and see who can clock the fastest speed.

The waves are about 4 meters high and if one takes them right at the right speed and right angle the boat starts surfing down the wave. It’s not easy to get it right because the waves are of course not regular but mainly because the rudder should be centered so as not to create any drag. Bernard clocked 12.8 knots and I 13.1 knots.

We stopped at 6 pm for cocktail time and dinner. As I was entering inside, I take a last look at the ocean and I can’t help wondering that it’s difficult to imagine that this weather will change so quickly. After dinner, we watched a film.

At 11 pm the wind dropped drastically to 8 knots. Even though we were told, it was still startling that after three days of strong winds, it disappeared so quickly. Because the sea is still moderately heavy, we put the engine on.

There is another worry. Mar Del Plata is still about

300 miles or about 38 h of navigation away and I have about 33 hours of fuel left. So we need to sail at least some part of the way. Tomorrow, when there is daylight and the sea is calmer, we will put code 0 on and sail as much as possible in the light wind conditions.

On the positive side, we see stars in the sky tonight, tomorrow should be a nice sunny day.

Ce matin, à notre grande surprise, le vent ne montre aucun signe de baisser. Il souffle encore toujours entre 27 et 33 noeuds. Le ciel est gris et l’air remplis d’embruns et de pluie. Et nous sommes encore toujours dans la machine à laver!

Nous avons pris une nouvelle météo et la seule explication que je vois est que la dépression a arrêté de bouger vers le Nord et nous l’avons ratrappé.

Philippe continuait d’être positif: “Profitez du vent qu’il y a, il va baisser ce soir vers 23h. Demain ce sera vent léger, mardi soir et mercredi, il y aura 0 vent.”

Dans l’après-midi, le vent avait adonné un peu (tourné vers l’arrière), Bernard et moi sommes sortis pour barrer sur les vagues. Michel et Niels se souviendrons. Chacun prend son tour pendant 10 minutes pour voir qui peut aller le plus vite.

Les vagues font environ 4 mètre de hauteur et si on la prend à la bonne vitesse et au bon angle, le bateau surfe en descendant sur la vague. Ce n’est pas facile car les vagues ne sont évidemment pas régulières mais aussi parce qu’il faut avoir la barre centrée et neutre pour ne créer aucune resistance à la glisse. Bernard a fait 12.8 noeuds et moi 13.1 noeuds.

Nous nous arrêtons à 18h, il est temps de penser à l’apéro et au dîner ce soir. En descendant, je jette un dernier coup d’oeil sur la mer et je ne peux m’empêcher de penser que c’est difficilement croyable que ce temps va changer aussi vite. Ce soir, on a regardé un film.

A 23h, le vent diminue drastiquement à 8 noeuds. On a beau être prévenu, c’est un sentiment étrange qu’après trois jours de vent fort, que ça disparaisse aussi vite. Comme la mer est encore modérément forte, on met le moteur.

Avec ces nouvelles conditions, j’ai un nouveau souci. Il reste encore 300 miles jusqu’à Mar Del Plata soit environ 38h de navigation, or il me reste environ 33 h de fuel dans les tanks. Nous allons devoir faire de la voile pendant une partie du chemin. Demain quand il fera clair et que la mer sera plus plate nous mettrons le code 0 et ferons de la voile autant que possible dans ce vent léger.

Sur une note positive, nous voyons des étoiles dans le ciel cette nuit, demain devrait être une belle journée ensoleillée.
