Saturday morning, we wake up to a completely different sky, it was completely covered with clouds. We continued to have a good wind, still coming from 170 around 20 knots. We are still moving at good speed, above 9 knots.

The big news of the day is that at 8am, a few minutes after having sent my last news, we caught a fish!

Andrea was at the rod and he was rapidly reeling it in. I furled the genoa and mainsail completely, yet our speed was still 6.5 knots. However this time it was perhaps an advantage as the fish could not swim away. Andrea also said there was not too much pressure, it was a small mahi-mahi about 60cm long. A very nice catch.

When we cleaned it we saw, that the fish itself had recently eaten two small fishes, one barely one centimeter long, the other three.

We enjoyed the freshest shashimi for breakfast and prepared the rest for lunch. We put the marinated fish in a pan in the oven with garlic, onions, tomatoes, capers, herbs and potatoes. Excellent!

The only difficulty was trying to keep everything on our plate! The wind had stirred up a strong sea with waves more than 3m50, as we are sailing with the wind almost in the back, the boat is rolling some time from one side to the other. But all was good, we didn’t lose any parts of this delicious lunch.

In the afternoon, I checked our 24h distance: 202 miles. A very good result. We passed the midway mark at 3 pm. In other words, at this rate, we will do the distance Fernando de Noronha – Praia in less than 6 days. I estimate however that it will be a little bit more and we should arrive on tuesday August 23 in the evening or early night.

In the evening, the wind subsided somewhat to 17/18 knots and so did the
sea, it is definitely more comfortable.

However the wind is starting to turn to the Southwest forcing us to change course
towards the Northeast in order not to have the wind straight from the back.

Checking the latest weather report, I see that the wind will veer to the west late on Monday and on Tuesday. In other words there is no point in trying to go East of the rhumb line, we need to be to the West of it now.
Furthermore by continuing straight we are heading in a no wind area.

We have just jibed this Sunday morning as I finish this news. We will move closer to the rhumb line then probably jibe back.

Le samedi matin, nous nous sommes réveillés sous un ciel complètement différent. Il était entièrement couvert par des nuages. Nous avions encore un bon vent. Qui vient encore toujours du 170 et environ 20 noeuds. Nous avançons à bonne vitesse, au dessus des 9 noeuds.

La grande nouvelle du jour c’est qu’à 8h du matin, quelque minutes après avoir envoyé le dernier news, nous avons attrapé un poisson!

Andrea était à la canne et il commençait à le rentrer prestement. J’ai enroulé le génois et la grand-voile complètement, mais notre vitesse était encore de 6.5 noeuds. Mais cette fois-çi, c’était sans doute un avantage car le poisson ne pouvait pas s’échapper. Andrea m’informait qu’il n’y avait pas trop de pression. C’était un mahi-mahi ou dorade coryphène d’environ 60cm.

Quand Andrea l’a nettoyé, nous avons vu qu’il venait lui-même d’avoir mangé deux petits poissons, un d’à peine un centimètre, l’autre de trois.

Nous avons gouté le shashimi le plus frais qu’il soit pour le petit déjeuner et nous avons préparé le reste pour le déjeuner. Nous avons mis les filets marinés dans un récipient au four avec aïl, oignons, tomates, câpres, herbes et pommes de terre. Excellent!

La seule difficulté fut d’essayer de garder le tout sur notre assiette! Le vent avait généré une mer forte avec des vagues de plus de 3m50, comme nous naviguons avec le vent presque arrière, le bateau roule parfois d’un côté vers l’autre. Mais tout se passa bien, nous n’avons rien perdu de ce délicieux repas.

L’après-midi, je vérifiais notre distance sur 24h: 202 miles, un très bon résultat. Nous passions la mi-chemin de notre traversée à 15h. En d’autres mots, à ce rythme le trajet Fernando de Noronha – Praia mettrait moins de 6 jours. Je pense cependant que nous devrions arriver le mardi 23 août en fin de soirée ou pendant la nuit.

Dans la nuit, le vent diminue un peu à 17/18 noeuds et la mer se calme un peu. C’est définitivement plus confortable.

Cependant, le vent commence à tourner vers le Sud-ouest ce qui nous force à changer de cap également vers le Nord-Est pour ne pas avoir le vent droit dans le dos.

En vérifiant les derniers bulletins météos, j’ai vu que le vent va venir de l’ouest lundi et mardi. En d’autres mots, cela ne sert à rien de construire de la réserve vers l’Est, il faut aller à l’ouest
maintenant. De plus en continuant comme on fait on va rentrer dans une zone sans vent.

J’ai attendu le lever du jour pour qu’il fasse clair, nous avons donc empanné ce dimanche matin au moment où je me prépare à envoyer cette nouvelle. Nous nous rapprocherons de la rhumb line et sans doute que nous réempannerons à nouveau.
